The application of AS 2870 to subgrade treatment design and the selection of the values of the key inputs parameters of suction change, depth of suction change and instability index values are discussed. This paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the current AS 2870 approach compared with the CBR swell approach. The use of AS 2870 is not widespread in subgrade treatment design for pavements in Australia, as many states adopt subgrade treatments based on California Bearing Ratio (CBR) swell values. However, the authors consider that the approach can result in inefficient subgrade treatment designs, i.e. This approach was introduced to address the poor performance of pavements constructed over expansive clays and has been used on many of DPTI's major infrastructure projects since, such as Northern Expressway, Southern Expressway, Torrens Road to River Torrens, Darlington Upgrade and the Northern Connector. In 2014 the South Australia Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) implemented the use of the Australian Standard for Residential Slabs and Footings (AS 2870-2011) for subgrade treatment design.
